ABSTRACT

The amount of hydrocarbons allowed in industrial and stormwater effluents varies greatly from one locality to another or from one country to another. Some countries govern effluents very generally, specifying only “no sheen” and others stipulate a specific allowable concentration.

The paper presents the regulations governing effluents in many countries and states and localities as well as international legal requirements.

Comments are included concerning the possible future course of these regulations.
